Change is one of the most common causes of stress.  It usually indicates a change of direction, it requires you to let go of the past and do something different. For many, change involves stepping out of their comfort zone. Some will try to control the world around them to reduce stress or resist change, others will become avoidant when making changes (avoiding people, places, confrontation), however change is most effectively managed from within. 

At the center of the cycle of change are two key features that increase your ability to deal with whatever life throws at you. These two key features are: resilience and resistance.

  • Resilience is defined as “the ability to recover quickly from illness, change, or misfortune; buoyancy.” Whereas Resistance is defined as “  ‘b) The property of a material that enables it to resume its original shape or position after being bent, stretched, or compressed; elasticity.
  • Resistance to change is the action taken by individuals and groups when they perceive that a change that is occurring as a threat to them.  Key words here are 'perceive' and 'threat'. The threat need not be real or large for resistance to occur.  Resistance slows down change.
