Having a panic attack can be a truly terrifying experience.  It can occur anytime and seems to come from nowhere and for apparently no good reason.  Your experience can range from a desperate need to escape, heart palpitations, hyperventilation, feeling nauseous, dizzy or a host of other unpleasant physical symptoms.  The experience of having a panic attack can cause further trauma, compounding the issue! 


Getting Help

Health experts will tell you "you've got to think positively, think about something else and do some exercise”; but for many, the only solution is powerful anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications, and for two-thirds of sufferers, these medications don’t help. If prescribed anti-depressants for anxiety, you may think to yourself “this is wrong; I know I’m not depressed – I’m anxious!”

However, if your doctor has prescribed pills, you will probably take them anyway.  But to the surprise of many people, the medication may not be effective!  In some cases, medications may treat some of your anxiety symptoms while not treating other symptoms at all. Many anxiety medications can be addictive while others may result in side effects that are disturbing.  If they don’t work for you, you eventually stop taking them and end up feeling worse about yourself, because now even the doctors can’t “fix you”! 


The Reason Why Most Anxiety Management Programs Don’t Work

The answer is simple and may surprise you - let me explain...

You see, the reason that most anxiety management programs don't work is because your own mind works against you.

When you’re having a panic attack, you’ve lost perspective, haven’t you? When you’ve lost perspective, you also lose the ability to reason (you become un-reasonable) and you become reactive.  You will probably know for yourself that it’s impossible to reason with an unreasonable person.  The reasoning functions of the mind, in that moment, are simply not available.  You are a prisoner of your own mind, again, feeling bad, trapped and out of control.

Even when you’re in this prison, when you’ve lost perspective, rarely have you lost complete control.  There is opportunity to learn the skills to deal with the events differently, to know what triggers are happening in your body, mind and your imagination, to create different outcomes to events.

I say to my clients, “You can’t break out of prison unless you know you’re in it”.  So understanding that you’re in a prison, is the first step towards breaking free!

But there’s some good news

Science has now provided us with a thorough understanding of what happens in the brain during a panic attack, and this information has allowed some very reliable methods to emerge for getting over the experience and ensuring that you never go through the same experience again.
