Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is a type of severe anxiety disorder. PTSD can occur after experiencing a serious (usually life threatening) event where you had reason to fear for your or another’s safety (e.g. car accident, earthquake, bushfire). In this disorder, the person has difficulty relaxing, and they have dreams or flashbacks of the event. They end up avoiding activities or places that remind them of the event because the stimuli may trigger the flashback and lead to a panic attack.

To put it simply, with PTSD it is like the mind hasn’t worked out that the threat is over, and the person becomes ‘stuck’ dealing with the memory.

Luckily, memories can change. When used in conjunction with therapy (such as CBT, Psychotherapy, Counselling), hypnosis can be used as a very sophisticated tool for helping people with PTSD.  If you suffer from PTSD, you will need a referral from your GP or psychologist approving treatment by hypnosis.

How Effective is Hypnosis in Treating PTSD?

This is not an easy question to answer, because conducting research is difficult. When conducting research as standardised approach has to be used - in other words, the hypnosis that everyone receives needs to be the same - it's not individualised for the individual. However, there are a number of studies that show improvement, even using a standardised approach.

Hypno-THERAPY, with the emphasis on therapy, is different because in every case, the therapy is tailored to meet the clients experience and needs. For some people, a few sessions will help tremendously.  For others they may need a few more.  But as you know, memories can change, and your experience of memories can change, and this is the basis upon which treatment of PTSD is based.  For more information, give me a call.  Happy to have a chat to you.
