Let's face it, there are times that breathing exercises just aren't enough!

The minds task is to find solutions and it’s as simple as that.  Sometimes it finds helpful solutions, but sometimes, the solutions just don’t work.  But the mind will keep looking for solutions, sometimes even creating problems so solutions can be found!

The mind is made up of a conscious mind and a subconscious mind.  The part of the mind that is responsible for scanning the environment for threats (the Amygdala) is part of the subconscious mind.  This part is also responsible for taking over in emergencies (e.g. tree about to fall on you).  But it can’t tell the difference between a real threat and a perceived treat or imagined one.  It treats them both the same.  In the case of panic attacks your mind is perceiving stress as threat and over-reacting.

The mind becomes ‘conditioned’ to respond this way anytime an event / situation even vaguely resembles a threat.  Logic is turned off and survival is turned on.

To ‘de-condition’ your behaviour, the learned response needs to be unlearned.  This part of your mind needs to be de-conditioned to appropriate reactions and assessments.  This is done by returning the emotionally loaded event into a state that is non-emotional. 

Rather than using the old slow systematic desensitisation methods, these days it is possible to decondition memories or panic situations using guided visualisation and hypnotherapy techniques known as the Fast Phobia Cure or Rewind technique, as well as a variety of other techniques.
